It has only been a year since Sparta High School started its very own Model United Nations club, and it has already been to Boston and back for Harvard University’s Model United Nations conference, which involves students from all over the world. Now, as they prepare for a second trip to the event, it is a perfect time to find out what Model United Nations is. Liam Armstrong, one of the many leaders of Sparta High School's Model United Nations, is here for a quick Question and Answer Session.

(The following questions were asked by Tiernan Doyle and answered by Liam Armstrong)
Q: What is Model United Nations?
A: Model United Nations, or M.U.N., is an extracurricular club in which students adopt the roles of real United Nations delegates and work to solve real world issues in the many committees of the U.N.- such as how the international community should handle Islamic Terrorism, African child warfare, and even where the 2022 Olympic Games will be held.
Q: How many people are in M.U.N.?
A: There are currently 50 members, 30 of which will attend H.M.U.N. this year.
Q: How often do you meet?
A: We meet rather scatteredly, but we tend to meet once a week on day 2’s.
Q: How much money have you raised for M.U.N.?
A: In our first fundraiser for this year, we had a car wash which made $840.00. We plan on having more fundraisers throughout the year.
Q: When will you be going to Harvard M.U.N.? What will you be doing while you’re there?
A: We will be attending H.M.U.N. in late January at the Boston Prudential Center. We will step into the roles of delegates and work with other students around the world in the practice of international diplomacy. I personally remain friends with students from Australia, Peru, South Korea, and India, which are only a handful of the countries that have people travel to Harvard for this conference.
Q: What Countries will you be representing?
A: We will be representing Brunei, a small country in the Southeast Asia which practices Sharia Law, and Mongolia in East Asia.

Whatever the outcome, best of luck to the Sparta Model United Nations - make sure to wish them luck when they leave for Boston in January! May their experience prepare them for a future in diplomacy and international relationships.
