The Best of 2015-Club Edition

At the end of every year, we look back and reflect on what we didn’t do and the things we should have done. Whether it’s to actually attend the club meetings you’re members of, to stop reaching for that extra cookie to cure your midnight hunger, or to simply press pause on your Netflix binge of Grey’s and finish your bio homework, most goals during the school year are never fully met. However, there was one club that set its goals high and started as an underdog but ended 2015 at the top of SHS Top Clubs list.

At the start of 2015, Frau Wessels and Frau Blahut, the two German “sisters” of SHS, created the very first German club also known as Deutsch Klub. The club is open to any German student interested in learning more about the German language and experiencing the culture from two German ladies themselves! One of the first events the club organized was holding their very own Oktoberfest at the end of September. Members volunteered to bring in various German cuisines seen at the festival such as bratwurst, pretzels with mustard, and even a special German soda called Spezi. With German music playing in the background and decorations all over the room, the German Club brought the Oktoberfest from Germany to Sparta High School.

Not only does the club participate inside the school, but it is seen outside as well. On December 5th, the German club along with other German-speaking students gathered at the German Christmas Market to perform their annual Christmas caroling show. Singing songs from Kling Glöckchen, Stille Nacht, and Auf dem Dach, the students put on a cheery performance that instantly put the audience in the Christmas mood. Afterwards, the students were able to enjoy the famous German waffles topped with melted Nutella that was offered at the market.

It’s easy to say, the German club began the year setting its goals high and conquered each and every one of them. If you’re a German-speaking student and want to join in on the Nutella and cookie filled meetings, the club meets every third Wednesday of the month in Frau Blahut’s room. Ich werde dich dort sehen!
