On Friday 11/13, Sparta High School Contemporary Literature and History classes welcomed 5 area veterans to share their experiences serving in the US Military.
Stephen Boonstra (USAF), Matthew Simpson (US Army), Jeremy Curcio (USMC), Nicholas Woisin (USMC), and Brian Keil (USMC) were all present to talk to and entertain questions from 8 groups of students during the afternoon. Mr. Steven Schels, K-12 Supervisor of Social Studies and World Language elicited the help from his department to host the guests. Danielle Kopp and Corinne Healy’s Contemporary Literature classes arranged for the guests and created the program.
Each guest had a very important story to tell. They reflected on their past and current experiences in combat and at peacetime. This authentic experience for the Sparta High School students is priceless. The dialogue amongst the students and the guests provided insight that no text book or video could ever deliver.
Included in the audience of the discussion groups were some of Sparta High School’s own faculty/staff- veterans: Chris Dugan, William Brennan, Gerald Carter, Eric Hood, Tony Lombardo and Dan Zill.
Sparta High School is grateful for the opportunity to host such an important event and is thankful for the service of all veterans.
