The Teacher of the Month award is Sparta High School’s way of saying, “thank you” to the best teachers in the school. Supervisor of the Science wing, Marisa Wilson, replied, “Our teachers and staff continually go above and beyond for their students, and choosing just one staff member to recognize each month is often a difficult decision.”
Ms. Wilson also told us that when looking for the next teacher of the month, the school looks for a “teacher who uses creativity or outside the box thinking when planning a project or lesson for their classes. Additionally, we look for someone taking on a leadership role in either the school or community.”
This month, the award went to teacher of Biology, Ms. Cayan, who, when asked how she felt, replied, “I obviously am very humbled to have been named teacher of the month. I have only been teaching at SHS for a couple years and have learned a tremendous amount from my co workers. My success is definitely, in part, due to their guidance.”
Ms. Cayan explained how she tries, “To provide all students with an opportunity to be successful. Each student has a unique background, and therefore, I attempt to accommodate and differentiate my instruction. I also use my students as resources, especially those who are currently shadowing clinicians or are trained as EMT’s.”
“With the support of the administrative team, I spent two weeks at Stevenson University receiving training in Biomedical education. This training prepared me to assist in the development and implementation of our STEM Academy at SHS. This specific training, as well as the assistance from my co workers, contributed to my success.”
When asked if there was still need for improvement, she concluded that, “There is no such thing as the perfect educator. As the students change, we as teachers must adapt to provide students with the necessary skills to be successful . Teaching Biomedical science is especially challenging, as researchers are discovering new things more rapidly than ever. Staying educated on current events and new scientific practices is something that I need to continue to do in order to provide students with the most up-to-date science.”
