SHS DECA Chapter Attends the DECA Northern Regional Competition

The Sparta High School DECA chapter attended the DECA Northern Regional Competition on January 6, 2015 at Ramapo College of New Jersey. The purpose of DECA (Distributive Education Clubs of America) is for students in all three marketing courses to apply their knowledge of marketing and business in a possible, real life business situation.

In December, members of DECA who had the intention to compete at the regional level took a written exam based upon their chosen category. At the competitive events, students are given a prompt in which they are to assume the role of a professional and present themselves in such a manner in front of a judge, who typically acts as a supervisor or customer in the role play scenario. Placement and results are then determined by averaging the written exam and role-play score together.

Participants may compete either solo or in a duo. In a typical solo event, students receive 10 minutes time to prepare in which they receive their prompt and are to spontaneously come up with a solution for the business world (Example: Establish a new promotional plan for a music streaming company assuming the role of the marketing director). In some categories, students prepare prior to the event and are given 10 minutes to present their plan to the judge (ex. Powerpoint, poster, etc.). In team events, the group is given 30 minutes of preparation time and up to 15 minutes in front of the judge.

The Sparta DECA chapter brought approximately 153 students to Regionals. All of Sparta’s students felt confident in their abilities going to the event and credited much of their success to marketing teachers Sandy Chiappini, Mark Rehm, and Maria Molitoris.

The students who qualify will advance to the State Career Development Conference, which is the state level competition. States will take place in Cherry Hill, NJ from February 21-23. The top three students in each category will then advance to nationals (International Career Development Conference) in Nashville, Tennessee.
