WaterAid is starting off 2016 with a bang—or rather with the clash of light sabers. Their upcoming fundraiser, Spar(ta) Wars, Episode I “Tape Wars,” is a duct tape a teacher to the wall event in the theme of Star Wars.
This upcoming week (1/11-1/14), students will have the opportunity to vote during lunch by donating money. The two teachers who earn the most amount of money will be duct taped to the wall in the cafeteria during lunch on January 15th.
Several teachers are in the running to be duct taped: Mr. Scognamiglio, Mr. Merrill, Mr. Fetherman, Ms. Lami, Mr. Lollgen, Mr. Hall, Mr. Tobin, Mr. Lopez, Mr. Trappe, Ms, Paiva, and Mrs. Lindsley.
All money raised for the event will be donated to the organization, WaterAid, where the funds will be used to provide fresh water, proper sanitation, and hygiene to countries in need.
Sparta High is currently decorated with Star Wars themed advertisements, courtesy of Alex and Rhett Curran (senior members of WaterAid) and Maddie Cuan (President WaterAid), which entail photos of teachers as various characters, such as Chewbacca, Rey, Poe Dameron, Yoda, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and more. The club is also excited to release comedic skits on the Sparta Scoop that feature participating teachers’ thoughts and comments on the fundraiser.
As the event draws closer, Ethan Guerra, senior member of WaterAid, comments, “After last year’s success, it should be interesting to see how it goes this year. We had a lot of people involved last year and with the growing reputation of the club itself, more people know what we’re about and what we’re trying to accomplish. I think that will help this fundraiser more than anything else.”
After the two teachers are duct taped to the wall on Friday by WaterAid members, students will have the opportunity to donate $1 to take selfies with the winners. Other offers, such as throwing pies in the winners’ faces, may be offered for an increased donation.
Remember to donate during lunch this week and vote for your favorite teachers to be duct taped to the wall—may the force be with you!
